Atheism vs Antitheism

March11

Its so great to write again after all this time. People inspire me to write and its been quite some time since anyone did that. The other day i was looking at this bbc documentry ‘A Brief history of disbelief’ and something kicked in again. Colin Mcginn, a British philosopher and an atheist was talking about a 15th century theory that was used to prove the ‘existance of God’. I thought it was absolutely mind blowing!!

The theory first defines God at the supreme and perfect being. Now if we assume that he does not exist, then he cannot be perfect. Existance is a part of being perfect. Hence, God exists. Well, fundamentally, this theory sounds totally great, but looking into the nuances, it seems crazy!! How can one really define a ‘perfect being’. Anything finite can still be categorized into perfect and imperfect but things such as feelings, emotions, values, morals… What is the perfect moral? Morals are relative amd always depend from person to person.

Personally, I am an antitheist. Like Mr Mcginn says, Atheism sounds negative and awful. I dont hate God. Bertrand Russell spent his whole life fighting God. Now thats just a wasted life.I just dont believe that there is something out there at all. No good, no evil, no ghosts, no superstitions… ‘Grand design’ Seriously?? Were trying to make God sound like that architect from th matrix and he wasnt a very good guy was he…?

What we do or achieve is absolutely the result of our own work and maybe the help of people around us. Although in a country like India, one is scorned upon if you say this. They automatically assume that you are trying to be fashionable and ‘cool’. Then they ask you, do you believe in anything at all? Well, I believe that fundamentally, all humans are good. Circumstances turn them into who they become later and ‘God’ who I basically define as the emotion ‘happiness’ comes from the goodness of human nature.

The only reason people hold on to him for dear life is because they are afraid of guilt. They believe that they can never be morally right without his help. After a point. God says it is right is just not enough. So much injustice is dont just using that as an excuse. For example, it is ok to kill someone in the name of God. Of course it is NOT ok to do that. I amĀ  not trying to propogate that there is no God.Hey.. to each his own.

I say believe in yourself. You have the strength and the ability to make the right decision. If there was a God, he is intrinsic within each life present here.

Believing in God or not is an individual’s choice….but if fear of god helps us preventing any harm being done to other , then i would say one should really believe in him… :)

i certainly agree with that.. but all I am trying to say that it is sad that people do not have the ability to believe in themselves and still do the right thing…
