Since past one week I have been hibernating from the active world…….the world of activities, studies, news, social gatherings, discussions, and millions other things which normally send a rush into my blood circulation and my pitch & volume goes creepingly high……

the only reason why I am into this state right now is - I wanted a break from the normal life of a student, and the occassion was suitable for such a thought - I have finished the term 1 and also its the time when I can look back into the past year and plan for the next one!  I believe its the most important task for any student of any level and in any discipline, to look back and then plan ahead - the direction, the motive, and the effort evaluation.

Most of the times we all get so shortsighted during the session that we lose focus of the larger picture of the purpose and the direction we are taking. things just trickle down to one thing - Scores and Placement. But I guess and I strongly say this - The purpose of all the professional education is not to just score high and get a placement at the end of the term, instead to become a professional and a self-dependent person and on a long run be economically suitable and useful for a group of people.

we often tend to forget the above roles and responsibilities we carry with us while studying, and hence it results in a distorted outcome and finally results into a dissatisfied future for ourselves.

Recently I was watching the movie 3 Idiots, and the above sentiment was echoed very well. Although I didn’t find anything new in the message of the movie, but I did like its presentation and the delivery method. Especially in a country like India, where so called ‘professionals’ are produced in tonnes its hard to find and realize that why do we have so much frustration in the day to day lifes of all such professional? Did we miss an important lesson somewhere in the process or did we start the game on a wrong note? Its high time we all should ponder over this thought before its too late.

I guess the time when I decided that I would be joining the B-school for my higher degree, something unusual happened in the markets, and although it was not shocking to see the giants falling from sky but it was almost like an incident which was waiting for a date of its occurrence.

Anyone, who was reading the trends of the US Financial Markets especially after it was formally accepted that ’sub-prime crisis’ is a huge crisis, people knew that the ripple has just started, and its influence would be determined only in times to come. It was clear that Financial Institutions would be the first ones to declare themselves bankrupt, and the market would go hay-wire. Everything happened, and even now the ripple has not stopped to demolish the established giants (or the institutions which are assumed to be giants).

Now, while I am sitting in the class-room and getting an opportunity to see things being discussed and analysed in front of me, I have a very basic question to ask - What kind of managers did all such companies had? and what kind of regulators were these who waited till so long before taking any action, and let the crisis to happen.

It goes beyond the logic of a normal human-being that the industry is not ready to shift its assumptions even when times are changing, and with time everything else is changing, but we don’t want to shift the basis of our assumptions! Like in the case of sub-prime crisis, the basic assumption was that - The prices of houses will keep rising in future, and hence this could serve as a basis for giving away loans. Ok, I accept that on a micro level this assumption is very well suited and works really well, but does this assumption works well in a setting of a developed nation like USA?

Had this assumption been made for a country like India, then the assumption will have a longer life-span. But in the case of  USA this assumption should have only a limited life-span. And why I say limited is because we are already aware that US presidents have had an aspirational target of providing homes to every US citizen. US presidents were so obsessed with this housing dream that they almost made it compulsory for banks to lend the loan amounts to everyone. First, the dream is flawed in itself, and second, does this not make our assumption about hosing prices baseless? If everyone needs a home, and the loans for buying a home is almost bribed to you, does it mean that we are in a proper supply-demand scenario? Think about it!

The last point which I wish to bring into discussion here is - Why do we always need to guided by the Bottom-Lines? And why do the Managers fear to ask the tough question?

The worst consequences of just caring about your Bottom-Line are evident to us in the form of a series of failed Financial Institutions. The only reason they have failed, is because they did not operate with the long-term in their mind, they just wanted to escape quarter after quarter with some positive figures. And now you have the results of such a ‘Quarterly Performance’  .

Finally, I am not able to digest the fact that - No One in the industry could see what was about to come. There were people in the industry who could very well see what was happening, and could have easily pointed out the flaw in the processes. But then why did they chose to remain silent? Why couldn’t they ask the tough questions and raise the trigger against those greedy CEOs? And this is what is most hurting to know.

And with all above thoughts, I believe I am in the most perfect time to study at a B-school, because topics like Ethics and Responsibility have become most important things then they ever were. Asking tough questions sounds much more logical thing to do rather than enjoying the momentary false pleasures of success! and I believe all those of you who are studying at a B-school right now are luckier souls, because these lesson are well grasped only when the industry is going through a crisis.

There is a saying that world of MBA colleges is divided into two - One which follows the Case Method, and the other which does not follow the teaching by case methodology.

Trust me, it always fascinated me while I was aspiring to join a B-school that how would it feel like discussing the cases in a classroom and the entire education from the course will depend on the cases, and only cases. Discussions with-in the classroom would form the entire basis of our understanding and future application of the concepts learnt.

Its difficult for any Indian to understand what it means to have a course structure based on only cases, as we Indians have a very different style of teaching in our schools and even during the professional graduate degree programs. We often to rely on books for anything and everything related to the course. And we are so much programmed to look into a book for every answer that we believe that books are the MOST important part of our learning.

In no way I wish demean the method followed in India, but at this point I have start to advocate the Case method system of imparting education. I have started to believe that this methodology is something which is closer to the real world, and if not 100%, at least a part of all the course should be framed in this manner.

However, there is a flip side to it - For the best results from a case based program, we should have world-class faculty and also the world-class participants. And even one of these two essential ingredients are missing from the system, then probably the results would start to deteriorate.

Sometime in future, I would wish to write a few cases, and also would wish to teach at institutes which follow the Case Method. Thats a wish as of now. And to see this wish fulfilled, I will have to first become a world-class person :) .

Recently I landed up in a B-School and felt that a lot of study-material related to MBA courses should be available at single place. and I attempting just the same. But it’s not only about the MBA study material, instead it is also about the other things of an MBA college.

I would love to share my thoughts on the courses, and the philosophies I have come across while at the school. Some exceptional talks, and discussion will also be posted here in times to come.

So guys….stay connected :)
