Algebra problem
by Anupama Prahlad - Friday, 9 September 2011, 07:11 PM
  I have a doubt.I couldnt understand the terminology in the following quest
Ram works for 40 hr week at a 20 rs basic pay.Overtime is paid at a rate of one sixth more than the basic pay.How many hours he has to work to earn 23.50.

My calculation
20+(t-40)*20/6=23.50

Their calculation

40 hrs-------> 20 rs basic
40 hrs-------->20*7/6(O.T)

=>120hrs--------->70(O.T)
x hrs----------> 3.5

x =6

so the hours is 40+6=46
I dont understand this logic..

Please clarify sad

When Ram Works 40 hrs, he gets 20 rs. When RAM earns 23.5, 3.5 has come from the overtime he did (say y)

Overtime pay when RAM had worked for overtime 40 hrs (all 40 overtime) = 20 +20/6 = 20+10/3=70/3.

So, the equeation becomes if RAM earns 70/3 for 40 hrs of overtime, how may overtime hours he has to work to get 3.5 rs.

y = 3.5x40/(70/3) = 6.

So, to earn 23.5 he has to work 40 (normal returning 20 rs) + 6 (returning 3.5 rs for 6hr overtime) = 46 hrs

  Hi PD

Your logic din strike me.
70/3 is the amount he gets for the over time and basic time both.

So equation should be 23.5x40/(70/3) . Isn't it ?

Hi I think ans should be 6 hours...
for 40 hours he is getting 20 Rs normally>>>>means (1/2)Rs per hour.

Basic rate =(1/2)Rs per hour

OT rate= 1/6 th more than the bsic pay. = (1/6)(1/2) + (1/2) = (12/7)Rs per hour.

Now to get extra 3.5 Rs, he has to work for

= 3.5/(12/7)

=6 hours

If am wrong, Correct me  and give the the detail ans..
