  Sentence:

The earth is not flat, which had puzzled many people in the old days.

Please comment on the wrong usage of 'which' in the above sentence.

The Closest noun is earth.

Which is referring to Earth in sentence.

But its not the earth which has puzzled many people.

Its the fact that earth is Flat.

So according to me , correct sentence should be

The fact that earth is not flat had puzzled many people in the old days.

  Sometimes, which, much like an absolute phrase does, will refer to the previous sentence as a whole. As mentioned in the Ultimate Guide.
