Total Gadha's DI Prize Winning Contest
by Total Gadha - Monday, 5 October 2009, 05:50 PM

di challenge for cat 2009 aspirantsI was down with fever day before yesterday and this was the best thing that could have happened to me- a full day rest! A year ago, I had blogged somewhere that ‘you know you’re an entrepreneur when you have to finish your tea sitting on a commode.’  So if you’re the laid back, lazy types (like I WAS) beware being an entrepreneur. So imagine my pleasure when I had to lie in bed for a full day having to do nothing! This also gave me a chance to leaf through some books and discover some problems. So today we are finally commencing what we have been thinking for a long time (and as usual never found time to start)- our prize winning contests. The first of these, the DI contest- is here. Post your solutions to these problems. We shall collect the name of each entrant giving correct solutions to all the three DI sets, give them serial numbers, and then select one winner through random.org. The winner will get a Rs 1000 cash prize. So keep posting the solutions as you solve them. The deadline for the contest is midnight, 15th October.

Also, if I do not see my CBT Club members attempting these problems I would personally kill them. I am feeling that they have grown lethargic and cocky lately. This is to wake them up from their dreams. There are still two months to go and a lot of game left.

I think these problems are very hard for all of you to solve but if you do solve them, the cash prize would be negligible compared with the feeling of achievement that you would get.

The first two problems come from the book ‘Adventures in Problem Solving’ by Shailesh Shirali, a very good book to go through if you all have time. The first set can also be seen in my TG Special thread.

@ Ramya Raghavan & Manish Nath

Hi mates. For Qn. 2

In the first row second column one of the two values can be eliminated.

This is using the fact that the total no. of wins should be equal to the total no. of losses. Total wins = 26. Hence the entry should be 3 to make the total no. of losses = the total no. of wins.

Therefore Team A Lost 3 matches & drew 1 match making its total score as 67.

To find out why this should be true always, consider a smaller version of the tournament with say 3 teams A, B, C each playing 3 matches with the other teams. The matches would be (AB),(AB),(AB),(BC),(BC),(BC),(CA),(CA),(CA). For any order of winning/losing in any match i.e. any bracket draw a similar table as in the original Qn. You`ll find that all entries under the WINS column add up to all the entries in the LOSSES column. Try it out to convince yourself.

  hello, sir,

2nd ques i got very easily. i dnt know of its a correct approach.

the no of matches any team can play is 4( not possible) 8 ( not possible as it would make team A's points even) and 12, 16....

we work with 12. let x be the pts awarded for win, y be for draw. then in D's case.

( 12- 6-1 )x + y = 43

( 8,3) is the only possible solution and filled table has already been posted smile

  my answers...
Q-2)

       Wins    Losses    Draws   Points
A       8          3            1        67
B       6          5            1        51
C       5          4            3        49
D       5          6            1        43
E       2          8            2        22

For each win & draw the awarded points are 8 & 3 respectively.

Q-3)

   1st   2nd    3rd    4th    5th
    I       B       K      A       E

And I am completely clueless about the 1st question.

  FOR QUES NO 1

BOWLING NO SHULD B AS
PQPQPQPQPQPQRPRPRPRPRPRPRP

SPELLS OF P AS FOLLOWS

over   run    wicket   maidens
  6       5         2           1/2
 6.1     9         6           1/0

i think there is any mistyping or something wrong as R have to bowl 7 overs in which 5 are maiden. so he spend 31 runs in 2 overs and taking 1 wicket. in order to maximize run scored in these 2 overs, we can take(7,11) with one out, but u cant have any option for the second over. R can spent at most 6 runs with 0 wickets.

However,the batsman gotten out by Q is C. The batsman unbeaten is K.
and the fall of wicket may b as follows:
A     6/1
B     14/2
C     20/3
D     26/4
E     31/5
F     35/6
G     42/7
H     53/8
I      59/9
J     59/10

Its difficult to find the batsman gotten out by R.

FOR QUES 2:

TEAM   WIN   LOSS   DRAW   POINTS
  A        8        3         1           67
  B        6        5         1           51
  C        5        4         3           49
  D        5        6         1           43
  E        2        8         2           22

 POINTS AWARDED
   WIN = +8
   DRAW = +3
   LOSS = 0

FOR QUES 3:

ORDER AS FOLLOWS: I B K A E

59/8

59/9

Hi Harsh,

I think u r correct in terms of determining no WIn for each Team but no. of losses are looking wrong. As per my understanding No of Win = No of Loss as if some one is winning some one has to loose. When we are adding your values we are getting No of Win = 26 and No of Loss = 21 which is wrong. As well your no. of Draw for team E is looking wrong. For Team C total score should be Odd as per TG's condition but u r getting Even value which is also wrong.

Thanks

Hi Admin,

My solutions are as follows, I have also sent a mail with the complete solution with explanation.

Problem 1 cricket:

1. Q dismissed E; R dismissed B.
2. K was left not out.
3. Fall of wickets: 1/6, 2/12, 3/18, 4/23, 5/31, 6/41, 7/44, 8/59, 9/59, 10/60

Problem 2 hockey:

            W    L     D     P

A          8     3     1      67
B          6     5     1      51
C          5     4     3      49
D          5     6     1      43
E          2     8      2     22

Points awarded for a win = 8, draw = 3.

Problem 3 race:

Ida finished the race first
The finish lineup is Ida, Bea, Ken, Ada, Eve

  Hi TG,

I know I've crossed my deadline. But still I'm trying it for the sheer joy of learning. I've already posted the answers that I got for 2nd and 3rd questions.

I'm now half way through the first question.

Here is what I got

FOW
6/1 --> A
12/2 --> C
18/3 --> D
23/4 --> E
31/5 --> B
41/6 --> F
43/7 --> G
59/8 --> H
59/9 --> J
60/10 --> I

R has taken B's Wicket.
K is the not out batsman

I'll get back to you once I have the complete solution.

  Hi Half Gadha,

Congrats on winning the contest...

I solved the 2nd and 3rd Questions myself. In the first problem, how did you distributed the maiden over of the bowlers.... Other things fell into their place... I was really stuck when I have to figure out how to distribute the maiden overs in the spell of P and R.

We can give straight maidens from first over and then distribute the runs or we can assume to have those maidens in their last slog overs or distribute between things.... Just let me know how you did that...

Thanks and wish you good luck....
-Vickram.
Re: Total Gadha's DI Prize Winning Contest
by Half Gadha - Monday, 19 October 2009, 01:38 AM
  Hey Vikram,
I started from the fact that R has to go for 31 in his two overs  out of seven bowled by him (13th to 25th) plus there are only two batsmen who can potentially have scored two boundaries (B and H if I remember correctly).
And if you take B to face R in 13th over, things will start falling in perspective.
I hope this in addition to my shared solution will be of help.
Some more points I would like to share :-
  1. All LR problems are solved by transferring them into information and constrains, but the toughest one often require an adjustment in the middle which though need not be random but can differ from previous problems attempted.
  2. To be honest, I'll not be at all surprised to see slightly different solution/answer to the 1st problem as am not at all a believer in exhaustive thinking, else Gary Kasparov will never lose a match in future. cool
With Regards,
H.G.
P.S.
I don't know why but for some reasons Google docs are inaccessible presently,so am attaching a copy of word doc sent to TG here too.
Re: Total Gadha's DI Prize Winning Contest
by Purav Aggarwal - Monday, 19 October 2009, 04:21 AM
  here's a start up to the first question :

1.name the bowler who's gonna bowl each over number : that's quite easy n m sure almost every1 must have done that
2.now here's a big hint ::
B and F have to be on individual score of zero when there's the first bowling change i.e when R comes to bowl in the 13th over.
Am not sure how i got here (since it's almost 15 days i did this ) but once i was clear of this , things started felling in place ...
then since B came to open with A , u'll have to adjust B such that he does not score neither does he gets out till there's a bowling change ...........
3.The number of possible fours also helped a lot.
u won't be sure of the exact number but a rough idea will help.
just calculate the maximum n the minimum number of possible fours.....
4.the two match decider overs by R of 14 and 17 runs helps a lot.
just see the players who can face n thereby score in the overs , this will take u the second point of my post n things get quite simple then .................

just take care of these points , am sure u'll get thru
just thru with my copy cat 6 and therefore not in a nice mood to write more

will post the solutions by tomoro (some formatting problem abhi ) but i would seriously suggest every1 to do this on your own until u solve it.
The question deserves this much respect or rather much more.

awesome question !!!!!!!!
i loved it smile
Thank You Tg for these questions

  Hi TG,

I know I am late for the contest. But I just want to solve any problem I can get my hands on. And while solving the problems listed above I found Q1 to be dubious. Everyone including honorable HG has taken an assumption that batsman come to bat in order from A to K. But this is not explicitly mentioned and neither seems to be an understood assumption. Correct me if I am wrong? Without this assumption there exists infinite solutions to the same problem.

Thanks
TG
