Similar Triangles- A primer for CAT 2007-2008 aspirants
by Total Gadha - Tuesday, 17 July 2007, 11:09 PM

cat 2007 cat 2008 xat 2008 similar trianglesI sincerely hope that I am able to finish all the chapters for CAT 2007 aspirants before August. Perhaps next year, in 2008, my task will become easier. The CAT 2008 aspirants will certainly find everything on totalgadha.com that they want to study online. But for now, I need to grovel, burn the midnight oil and compose one chapter after another for CAT 2007 students to strengthen their fundamentals. As promised in my last article, the current article deals with a frequently occurring topic in geometry in CAT- similarity of triangles. Most of you will notice that this topic is coming year after year in CAT and, as geometry questions in CAT are easy compared with other topics, mastering the concept is easier than mastering concepts in Algebra, Permutation and Combination, or Probability.

Hi Eshika,

Try giving the print command directly (without saving) if you have a printer attached to your computer. Otherwise, right-click on the image and save them, open the image in 'paint' and then take a printout. I hope it works. If it does not then I do not know what will. sad

I do reply to forums all the time. Most of the times, I do not like to interfere in an ongoing discussion unless I am needed. But yes, I do know some of the posts that I have to reply to. I will do so soon. smile

Hello TG

Thanks for replying sooo soon.smile

I tried using both these options bt no go as when i saved the image using 'paint' the font size was very small which makes it unreadable.Dont worry i will do that.

  Hi Eshika,

Right-click on the image and select 'save as' option. Save it on your desktop.
Open paint. Find the file through 'open' option and open it.

See if the image is still small.

Hello TG

I tried that and  the font size was readable bt when i print it gives half diagram on one page and the other half on next page.

This case is with triangles only as when i print other material it is working fine.

I will read it thru computersmile

Hey 'hehe haha'...

BPQ~ABC thr4 BP/PA=BQ/QC=3/4 (In Ques, given the ratio as 3/4).... (i)

In BPC, BD/PD=BQ/CQ .... (ii)

From eq (i) and (ii),

PD/BD=4/3 thr4 PD/PB=4/(3+4) thr4 PD/PB=4/7 .... (iii)

So PD=4/7 PB.

I believe now its easy from here... smile

Re: Similar Triangles- A primer for CAT 2007-2008 aspirants
by Ramkumar PS - Monday, 30 June 2008, 05:09 PM
  hi

the value of qo is got from the deduction that the 2 triangles osq and orp are similar.i guess u know that how..

so we have : sq/rp=oq/op

3x/4x =oq/28

therefore oq = 21.

and for the reason why the 2 triangles r similar, we have

angle osq= angle orp (90 degrees since the line joining the center and the point where the tangent meets is perpendicular to the tangent.)

and also they have a common angle O.

and angle oqs= angle opr(corresponding angles)

i guess i am right and u would understand how qo was obtained.

  Hello TG sir,
First of all i would like to convey my heartiest regards and respect for a type of person you are and the noble job you are doing. What i have percieved is that topics explained by you is easy to explain as they are the sap of of your internalised concepts on which you have pondered over and ,thats why, you are able to give them a lucid form.

Hi,

Forum, is pretty awesome and informative in brushing ur school days.

Can you please help me on a Rectangle probl:

Let sides of a rectangle be a & b. If opposite vertex are joined, then the length of the line obtained joining them will be equal to the longest side of the rectangle. Next, diagonal bisects new line into 2 equal halves. Hence what will be rectangle side ratio.

Plz let me know the method in solving the problem.

Cheers,

Sanjeev

In the  solution to the last question,  how do you get angle BCD =angle BAC ?
Re: Similar Triangles- A primer for CAT 2007-2008 aspirants
by ravi mr. - Thursday, 16 October 2008, 03:35 PM
  For ∆BCD & ∆BAC Since, ang. B is common And , ang.BCD = ang. BAC So, ∆ BCD ~ ∆ BAC Now, ar(∆BAC)/ ar(∆BCD) =(BC/BD)2 = (12/9) 2 = 16/9 Subtracting 1 from both sides we get, ar(∆BAC)/ ar(∆BCD) – 1 = 16/9 – 1 {ar(∆BAC)-ar(∆BCD)} / ar(∆BCD) = 7/9 Therefore, ar(∆ADC) / ar(∆ BDC) = 7/9
