  Hi Dagny!

A lot (if not all) of the (Indian) management institutes offer a course on general management. Could you please shed some light on that? What would come under such a course? How is it different from an MBA in Finance, Systems etc? Why would someone opt for a course on "general" management over something more specific like Finance, Systems, HR, Operations or Marketing? Also what kind of job profiles would one expect on completion of such a course? Some examples? For instance, for finance we know it would be a finance related job; for Systems it would be IT related etc.

Hi CF,

A generalized, generic, traditional or general management MBA program exposes a student to the management knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully operate within and among a variety of different areas of business. Generalized degrees are typically 2 years in length. The first year is devoted to the study of a basic core of business fundamentals that usually includes Finance and Accounting, Communications, Economics, Business Policy, Marketing, Organisational Behaviour etc. In second year the student, based on the career choice and interest, opts for a set of electives, which is indicative of the interests even though there is no formal specialization. No IIM offers specialization. In short, every IIM offers general management only. The PGPX offered by IIMs also has a general management focus but it is designed for working executives and is skewed in one year. XLRI offers a one year programme in General Management.

Specialized courses are offered by colleges like IIFT-Specialization in Foreign Trade
IRMA-Rural Management
IIFM-Forestry Management

IIM Bangalore- PGSEM
by Dagny Taggart - Monday, 6 August 2007, 01:03 PM

The program curriculum covers general management concepts and is open to candidates who have more than two years of work experience and are working in an Information Technology company. While two years is considered as a mandate for the admission, the institute feels that a person with four to five years of IT experience would be the real benefactor from this course and hence such candidates are preferred. That said, people with more and less years of experience also make it to the course. The average years of experience of the candidates have been six years for most of the batches. Since June 2005 the program is simultaneously available in Bangalore and Chennai.

The program is run under the aegis of the Center for Software and Information Technology Management (CSITM). The CEOs and/or top executives of companies that have provided endowment and support to the CSITM (referred to as partner companies) are on the advisory board of the CSITM to ensure that the program is in tune with the needs of the industry. The partner companies are Infoys Technologies Ltd., Intel Techonologies India Pvt Ltd., Motorola India Electronics Pvt. Ltd., Oracle India Pvt. Ltd., Sasken Communication Technologies Ltd., Sun Micro Systems India Pvt. Ltd. and Wipro Technologies Ltd.

There are two kinds of seats in the program. The first type of seats is open seats. Any candidate who meets the admission requirements can apply for these seats. The other type are those that have been earmarked for employees of the companies, known as partner companies, that have provided endowment to the Center for Software and Information Technology Management. Candidates who apply for these seats have to meet the admission requirements and be nominated by one of the partner companies. All candidates have to follow the same procedures for admission and fees.
