  Here's the question.
In a village of 2029 inhabitants, at least x villagers have the same English initials for their first name and their surname. The least possible value of x is

I m confused.I dont know to proceed.I feel its a problem on permutation & combination.
Kindly help.

no. of possble ways is....26*25*3+25*3......subtracted from2029 from 4.

i.e just divide by 25 to get the remainder.smile

  Since there are 26 alphabets in English, and assuming the least possible case, there will be (2029/26 = 78 (+ 1(remainder))) inhabitants with same initial letter for the first name. Now, for each of the 78 inhabitants with same initial letter for the first name, there will be (78/26) = 3 inhabitants with same initial alphabet for the last surname. So, the least value of x is 3.
