TISS 2008 CAT 2008 CAT 2009 mba 2008The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936, as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. The first school of social work in India, the TISS was a pioneering effort, characteristic of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT). Its establishment was the result of the decision of the Trustees of the SDTT to accept Dr. Clifford Manshardt’s vision of a post-graduate school of social work of national stature that would engage in a continuous study of Indian social issues and problems and impart education in social work to meet the emerging need for trained human power. In 1944, the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences.

Institute Facts (Infra, Activities etc.)

A campus which is probably the largest amongst all the Management schools in Mumbai, is forever buzzing with activities. Sounds of the Guitar and the Flute 'jugalbandi' from some corner of the campus, singing of the Birthday Song at midnight from the Dinning Hall, practices of 'Mohalla bolta hai' or 'Pehel' (theatre groups in the campus) in the Main Lounge or presentation slides being prepared in the hostel lounge - this campus stays alive well past midnight

The Women's Studies Library of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences is, as the name suggests, which has a specialised collection of books, monographs, and brochures on women's issues. The Library's database deals with a wide range of themes pertaining to the development discourse and feminist theories.

The M.K. Tata Memorial Gymkhana and Recreation Centre includes facilities such as gym, yoga, table tennis, carom, badminton. An aerobics programme has also been introduced to encourage physical fitness activities amongst students.

The Students’ Union organises friendly sporting events (both outdoor and indoor), and the Annual Sports day is a much awaited day in the sports calendar for students, staff and faculty alike. Cultural activities such as celebration of national holidays, the Spic-Macay music festival, food festivals, and the three-day TISS Cultural Fest — Quintessence (fondly referred to as Quinty) — form some of the cultural highlights of life on the campus.

The TISS has worked in disasters not just in Maharashtra, but in various parts of the country. The academic calendar is suitably modified to ensure participation of students and staff alike. Vacations are shortened and the entire Institute, in a spirit of co-operation, works longer hours to ensure that student exams and the academic schedule are not greatly disturbed.

Every student of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences is a member of the Students’ Union. The Union organises a varied programme of activities including lectures, debates, sports and social events. Members of the Union are represented on the Students’ Aid Committee and the Dining Hall Committee, along with the faculty of TISS.

Hi Dagny,

I am keen on pursuing a course in HR in TISS, but I have a few questions on this. Is this institute giving an MBA degree or an MA degree? I went thru their website, it looks like they will give us an MA degree and not MBA, if my assumption is right then y is this institute classified as a B-School?

Thanks in advance.

  Hi Sonia,

TISS offers MA in HR but holds an equivalent value to any other MBA in HR diploma/degree.

I would like to know certain more things:

1)ARE THERE NEGATIVE MARKINGS?

2) WHAT ARE THE CUT OFFS FOR HR PROGRAMME?

3) CAN I GET SAMPLE PAPERS SOMEWHERE?

4) WHAT BOOKS/MAGZINES/SOURCE WOULD BE HELPFUL FOR GK?

5) GK IS ASKED ON WHAT MAJOR TOPICS?

6) ARE LAST YEAR'S QUESTIONS REPEATED?

7) IS GK ON MANAGEMENT ASKED?
