18.As per Subject-verb agreement, in such cases the verb has to match the subject nearest to it(laptop, in this case), so shouldn't the answer be 'it'
22.shouldn't the answer be "they are the only one who really know what happened"
28.again, shouldn't the answer be "letters to incomming freshmen"
36.'its' instead of 'it'

Thanks

Hi shishir

I can notice from various posts (including me) that many are yet not confident about the answer for 9 i.e. I bcoz the parent article recomends use of pronoun in objective case after THAN if verb doesnot follow it.

Request you to share the response/clue in detail that you mange to get from some other thread.

Thanks in advance

Hi Dagny,

Could you please give an explanation for Question 9.

" I'm very tall, but guess what! My sister is taller than ______. (I / me) "

There is no verb following 'than'. So shudn't the ans be 'me'. I have read some discussion in an another forum but i'm not satisfied with the reasoning.

hi Dagny,

I have also similar doubts reagrding Q9.

In Q36, the answer should be "its" but you have given the ans as "it". Please do explain this.

In Q37, there is no error as according to the article "Joel suspected the governors and since governors are referred to as object, the sentence should have "whom". Please do explain this.

hi Dagny

Nice article indeed..clarified many of doubts..but these are the ones that are still lurking in my mind..

9. I'm very tall, but guess what! My sister is teller than ________ (I/me)
11. When the committee submitted ___________ (its/their) four versions of document, it was clear to us that the committe members had acted as individuals, not as a group.

According to ur article, the answer for qn. 9 should be I. (many others have pointed this out) and as for qn. 11, the committee is divided so shouldnt it be: their four versions of document? I just read through your Nouns chapter and this is the answer I arrived at..

Will be great if u could answer the above queries..thanks a lot againsmile

  Hi Dangy Maam,

I have few doubts. Can you please enlighten us?

9. I'm very tall, but guess what! My sister is teller than ________ (I/me)
My ans : me not I.

11. When the committee submitted ___________ (its/their) four versions of document, it was clear to us that the committe members had acted as individuals, not as a group.
My doubt: Committe members are divided in their decision so ans should be their and not its!!!

18  The books or the laptop..........
My doubt: the pronoun should pointed out the nearest noun. so my ans is it and not them.

Eagerly waiting for ur reply.  Thanks for an article.

  Hello dagny,

Need your help on certain questions. Here they go....

1) (Question 15) That package of clothes is heavy, so lift
(them/it)
Doubt: Package is a collective noun, referring its component
individually. Hence the pronoun should be plural rather
than singular. Thus I believe answer should be "it".

2) (Question 18) The books or the laptop would be quite enough to
carry, so don't tire yourself over (it/them).
Doubt : When we have compound subject and separated by "or",one
is plural and other is singular. The pronoun should
agree with nearest pronoun. Hence I believe answer
should be "it".

Please clarify my doubts.
Re: Pronoun- Errors

  I did a mistake perhaps...

1) Answer should be plural, hence I believe it should be "them".

Hi Dagny,

Excellent Article. It has helped me focus on required area of question.

I have tried to solve the above exersice. But I am not confident of my approch. Can you have a look and guide me if my approch is right or is it just luck that is giving me right answers. I would be glad to see your valuable comments whereever you may feel the need to elaborate.

Plz find my approch as below:

1. Roger, Sam and ___(me/I) are going to play ice hockey.

-> Here we need to consider "Pronoun Case"

We do not need to think much here, as Roger and Sam are in Nouns, thus we may use either Noun or Nominative pronoun. ( As both the

sides of "And" should be in same case)

Thus Ans should be : I
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
2. The best players on the field were you and _______(they/them) .

-> Again a case of "Pronoun Case"

Lets not think much and reconstruct the above statements , as

*) You were the best players on the field
*) They were the best players on the field
*) Them were the best players on the field.

And we know, the answer should be : They
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
3. He/Him _____ and Sharon are graduating from college next year.

-> A case of "Pronoun Case"

Similar to the question 1. As Sharon is a Noun, thus we may use either Noun or Nominative pronoun.( As both the sides of "And" should

be in same case)

Thus Ans should be : He
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
4. My friends and _______(me/I) like to do our work on phone.

-> Still a case of "Pronoun Case"

Similar to the question 1. As Friends is a Noun ( Common ), thus we may use either Noun or Nominative pronoun. ( As both the sides of

"And" should be in same case)

Thus Ans should be : I
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
5. The location of the cave is a secret between ____ (we/us) two.

-> A case of "Pronoun Case"

The blank is the object of the statment. Thus objective case must be used.

Thus Ans should be : us
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
6. He was so worried about ____(who/whom) he should ask to the big dance, that he ended up not asking anyone.

-> Again a case of "Pronoun Case"

Consider the part of statment :"He was so worried about ____".
The blank is the object of the statment. Thus objective case must be used.

Thus Ans should be : whom

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

7. George scored in the final two seconds, and the crowd roared _______(its/their) approval.

-> A case of "Pronoun agrement"

A collective noun ( Crowd here) is singular if they are agree to something and plural if they have more than one opinion.
Thus we need to have singular pronoun here.

Thus Ans should be : its

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
8. At first, I wanted to split the money between Jo-Jo and _________( me / I ) . I ended up giving up money to_______(me/ myself .)

-> Both blanks are case of "Pronoun Case"

Consider First:

We see, Jo-Jo, a Noun on one side of "and" and may feel to use Nominative case. But we also observe that "Between" tries to make Jo-Jo

and blank as object.

Thus Ans should be : me

Consider Second:

When one acts on oneself, then possessive case.

Thus Ans should be : Myself
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
9. I am very tall, but guess what! My sister is taller than ________(I/me .)

-> A case of "Pronoun agrement"

Observe the word "than". Implies comparision. And comparision is always betwwen similar things.
Thus blank needs to be similar to "My Sister", which is a Common noun. Thus we need to use nominative pronoun.

Thus Ans should be : I

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
10. He didn’t seem to care much about ______(us/we) voters.

-> Again a case of "Pronoun Case"

The blank is the object of the statment. Thus objective case must be used.

Thus Ans should be : us

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
11. When the committee submitted ________( its/their ) four version of the document, it was clear to us that the committee members had

acted as individuals, not as a group.

-> A case of "Pronoun agrement"

A collective noun ( committee here) is singular if they are agree to something and plural if they have more than one opinion.
Thus we need to have plural pronoun here.

Thus Ans should be : their

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
12. ___________(who/Whom) did Dorothy choose to receive the computer?

-> Again a case of "Pronoun Case"

Lets answer this question: Dorothy choose to receive the computer to him
Him => Whom ( same case )

Thus Ans should be : Whom
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
13.___________(who/Whom) do I see to get hired?

-> Again a case of "Pronoun Case"

Lets answer this question: I see him to get hired
Him => Whom ( same case )

Thus Ans should be : Whom
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
14. For single participants, the beneficiary is ____________(whoever/whomever) is designated by the participant in the form.

-> A case of "Pronoun Case"

Lets consider the part of statement: ____________is designated by the participant

so,

Is "He is designated by the participant" correct or "Him is designated by the participant"
Obviously "He is designated by the participant"

He => Whoever ( same case )

Thus Ans should be : Whoever

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
15. That package of clothes is heavy, so don’t lift_________ (it/them )

-> A case of "Pronoun agrement"

Clothes are plural, But package of Clothes is singluar
Thus we need to have singular pronoun here.

Thus Ans should be : it
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
16. If anyone of the sisters needs my car, she/they _________ can call me.

-> A case of "Pronoun agrement"

Sisters are plural, But anyone of the sisters is singluar
Thus we need to have singular pronoun here.

Thus Ans should be : She
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
17. At the end of the movies, each of the couples cleared (its/their) ________ understanding.

-> A case of "Pronoun agrement"

Couple "here" is singular.
Thus we need to have singular pronoun here.

Thus Ans should be : its
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
18. The books or the laptop would be quite enough to carry, so don’t tire yourself over __________(them/it .)

????????????????????????????????????

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
19. _____________(Whoever/whomever) is hired by the company will be assigned to another location.

-> A case of "Pronoun Case"

Lets consider the part of statement: ____________is hired by the company

so,

Is "He is hired by the company" correct or "Him is hired by the company"
Obviously "He is is hired by the company"

He => Whoever ( same case )

Thus Ans should be : Whoever
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
20. He is an author, (who/whom) ____ , you know, has written three books.

-> A case of "Pronoun Case"

Lets rephrase the part of statement: ____________ has written 3 books

as "_______ (he/him) has written 3 books"

Is "He  has written 3 books" correct or "Him  has written 3 books"
Obviously "He  has written 3 books"

He => Who ( same case )

Thus Ans should be : Who
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
21. There are several people _____(who/whom) I believe should be included.

-> A case of "Pronoun Case"

Lets rephrase the part of statement: _____(who/whom) should be included.

as "_____(He/him) should be included"

Is "He should be included"" correct or "Him should be included""
Obviously "He should be included""

He => Who ( same case )

Thus Ans should be : Who
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
