Problems Of the Week – POWs for the season 2012-13

Problems are part of every life. Willingly or unwillingly, we have to face problems. Now it is##;utterly##;unwise to ignore problems,##;simultaneously it is##;foolish to invite problems.
Some problems in life are unavoidable, like##;food, clothing and shelter etc.##;We need to work for them. By hook or crook, one needs to manage his gross body. But##;our subtle body (composed of mind, intelligence and ego)##;seems to create problems when we##;start looking##;upto the persons on higher platform. Higher in the sense of education, emoluments, social status, lifestyle etc. At that moment we start inviting problems. MBA or rather CAT may be such an invited problem for many of you.

We can live our life smoothly without it also, but our subtle minds show us an alluring picture of horizon and we , as a two-legged animal, start running to win that endless race. In my IIIrd year of engineering at DCE, I found almost all of my##;co-students preparing hard for GRE or GMAT, some working for CAT and GATE also.##;While majority of them were working hard for the upcoming placement season, which doomed that year anyhow. But what was going in my mind was that##;whatever hard work we put in 11th-12th std was##;rarely used in our enginnering. To add to woes, whatever we were studying at college was way beyond CAT/GMAT prep##;and computer languages, one was supposed to##;be proficient in, for better placements. Engineering studies hardly generated any constant enthusiasm in##;my dull brain. That's why I never opted for any of the available options at college and rather concluded that my 4 year stint at a national repute engineering institute was complete waste.

But that decision/indecision never disheartened me. I took it as a challenge and was ready to kick the problems, whatever I was going to face. I worked as chemical/mechanical expert at Action Shoes, then as a civil designer for water treatment plants, did some chemical processes and generated an alternative to some chemicals used in footwear industry, finally setteled at home business. But there was a constant feeling in my heart for imparting knowledge, whatever I had accrued through different phases of life.##;

So there was a time, when I got this opportunity to join one of the reputed MBA-prep institute at my hometown Hisar. Luckily (or unluckily) I was selected and after sometime I was teaching to the students##;with an average age higher than mine. On analysing, I found that##;almost all of them were running to win that endless race which I had discarded##;long ago. What I was teaching was suitable for school kids. So with this comprehension that if these things would have been taught in schools itself, students won't have to worry much for that at a later stage in their life, I joined a school at Hisar and worked there for more than a year. During that time only TG contacted me and called to Delhi.

For last some years, I am teaching at TathaGat but I see students with similar faces, same dilemma. During these years, with my keen observation, I have found that most of the students try to ignore problems. They try to avoid problematic situations, so they look for short-cuts. But##;it is Maya (that which is not). If a student know how to find##;squares, only then he can know without fail that last two digits of x² are same as the last two digits of (50 + x)² and that of (50 - x)². So key##;word is##;'Persevere' and the key attitude is facing the problem boldly and kicking it hard.

I am starting the##;POW series for this year. You are to post your answers with explanations, so that they can be cross-checked. I'll try to post the answers/solutions afterwards. Students who are preparing or CAT-2012 or CAT-2013 can equally be benefitted, I hope so - Kamal Lohia
